FIT Girlies Who Inspire Me

Today I thought I’d talk about a couple girls from FIT who I get a lot of inspiration from! In the first photo is my friend Noshaba who is a textile design major and the president of the Muslim student union. On both her Instagram and TikTok feed, you’ll see a lot about how she puts together fun and unique outfits using hand me downs, thrifted, and second-hand pieces. Her style is very versatile and she encourages reusing, rewearing and reworking in fashion and yet, never fails to amaze me with each look! Her Instagram handle is @/no.sha.ba , give her a follow!

In the next picture is Annalyse who is a fashion business management major and a fashion TikToker with a 55.0K following! Just like Noshaba, she also inspires versatility in fashion and she puts together outfits using thrifted and second hand clothing. Some of her favorite brands are selkie, daisy & the pyramid collection. Her TikToks consist of many fun looks with a dark flair and different gothic themes inspired by movie characters, T.V. shows, creatures and the like! Her Instagram is @/annalysetaylor , check her out!

H&M's "Edition" by John Boyega

This article discusses H&M’s new Edition collection by John Boyega, which consists of classic pieces for the Fall season and a couple statement pieces. The garments are made from materials that are recycled, organic and innovative. This includes a new vegan alternative to leather called Vegea, made partially from waste produced by the winemaking industry. The materials in the real products of the collection serve expanded benefits by supporting a social cause and allowing consumers to practice sustainability by purchasing them.

Eye Buy Direct

For my outfit of the day, you'll see a simple black Michael Kors parka to keep warm, a hijab from Jasmine, a small boutique in Steinway, fishnet gloves from Spirit Halloween and glasses from Eye Buy Direct, an online eyewear store! I'm also wearing a lavender tank top for a pop of color and cardigan from Forever 21. I love putting together pieces from completely different kinds of stores and companies to see how they all come together to fit into my style. I felt particularly inspired by Nadia, a TikToker who goes by 'FairyNadia' who has a colorful sense of style and uses fun statement jewelry and accessories to tie simple looks together!

An asset to my overall aesthetic would have to be my glasses. I thought I’d talk a little bit about how Eye Buy Direct encouraged my brand loyalty. Their designs are unique, fun and on trend, they’re super affordable with price points starting at $6 and yet the quality of their glasses are superior compared to any other glasses I’ve ever had which makes for high consumer perceived value. I believe we shouldn’t have to pay around $200 on something we need and that we should be able to choose from a large variety of frames that make us feel confident if we'll be wearing them everyday and Eye Buy Direct expresses this shared belief between them and their customers through their products, exhibiting superb customer relationship management. I highly recommend them!

The Fashion Influence of Squid Games

Last week in intro to fashion marketing, we talked about influencers and their impact on consumers’ ever-changing fashion related purchase decisions. The attached article discusses the unforeseen fashion influence of Squid Games, Netflix’s most popular show ever. Personally, fashion is among the last things that came to mind when watching a show about competing to the death in children’s games, so it was interesting to read about the surge in searches for retro tracksuits, white slip-on sneakers and the color teal in general. Vans become the most viewed slip on sneakers since the show's release. The show coming out the month before Halloween likely played a huge factor in these trends. Give it a read!

Greenwashing in the Fashion Industry

I’d like to share an article I found that discusses greenwashing in the fashion industry, which is when marketers mislead their consumers by presenting a brand as more sustainable than it really is and don’t really address how they contribute to environmental problems and what they can do to fix it. One way fashion marketers can show genuine social responsibility is by opening up about their business ethics and specific actions they’ll take to better the environment in the production and manufacturing of their clothing. ASOS, for instance, has made being transparent a goal among their four key ‘fashion with integrity goals’. The article also shares how we as consumers can detect greenwashing & make more environmentally conscious purchase decisions. Check it out!

My Aesthetic & Inspiration

I love to change it up when it comes to fashion and get most of my inspiration from 90s alternative fashion. I think my overall aesthetic inspiration is best depicted by my favorite fashion blogger, Luanna Perez, who I get a lot of my inspiration from. Her Instagram handle is @/Luanna. What I love about alternative fashion is the level of range it offers, having a little something for everyone. This is particularly true for someone who not only has a dark flair, but prefers to dress modestly, like myself. Alternative fashion from the 90s often consists of minimalist, loose fitted clothing that offers nearly full coverage, or at least can easily be tweaked to do so, and can still make a statement which is perfect for me as a hijab-wearing Muslim woman. For today’s look, I put together a distressed denim jacket from Easy Pickins, a retail store in Steinway that offers the latest trends at low prices, with a plaid shirt dress that I got from Forever 21. My boots are from Dirty Laundry, my hijab is from a small boutique in Steinway called Jasmine and my glasses are from Eye Buy Direct. I think these very simple and inexpensive pieces came together to create an outfit of a timeless appeal. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone with a similar sense of style but are looking to express themselves on a budget!

Breathable Nail Polish

As someone who loves doing her nails & always gets compliments on them, I thought I’d use my first post to talk about the nail polish brand I use called 786 Cosmetics. This nail polish was a game changer for me as 786 markets their nail polishes as water permeable with their main target market being Muslim women. For those who don’t know, Muslims perform a cleansing ritual on a regular basis that requires water to reach certain parts of the body, including nails, which most nail polishes prevent. They recognized the potential in this product development which really payed off as the brand is now globally recognized. They also demonstrate social responsibility by being cruelty-free and donating 20% of its profits to refugees around the globe who were heavily affected by COVID-19. If you’re Muslim, vegan, or just anyone who loves nail polish and is looking for more sustainable options, check them out!
